Introduction

To win a referendum testing the mandate of Chile's authoritarian Pinochet regime, the opposition hires a young commercial director. A brave, entertaining film that audaciously recreates the events of 1988.

Director Larrain, who depicted the birth of a dictatorship in Post Mortem (2010) and its most violent period in Tony Manero (2008), made No as the conclusion to his trilogy looking back on the Pinochet era. Each film is stylistically different, and here he focuses on the last days of the autocratic regime through the prism of the advertising industry, a symbol of capitalism, using a vintage Japanese camera to complement footage from the 1980s.
